On Sunday, September 11, 2011, members of the hiking community of New Hampshire, in teams of five hikers, will carry the US flag to the summits of all forty eight mountains in the state of New Hampshire. They will place the Stars and Stripes on the peaks. The tradition was started in 2002 to remember the lives lost in the tragic events at the World Trade Center in New York City.
One team will hike up Mount Willey in Crawford Notch carrying The Flag of Heroes. This flag has been designed to resemble the Stars and Stripes with a Blue canton containing 50 stars and the names of all the people who died on that day including those in the Towers as well as the Fire and Police Depts., EMS and Court Officers typed in Red and Blue to form the stripes in the remaining field
