MARYLAND STATE FLAG FACTS

Maryland was the 7th state to enter the Union on April 28, 1788.  The state flag was ratified in 1924 and reflects the role of the Baltimore family in the state's history.  The flag was officially adopted in 1904.

George Calvert 1st Baron Baltimore, Lord Baltimore, returned home to obtain a fresh charter.  He died before the process was completed thus his son, Cecil, inherited both the barony and the territory.  The territory's name, Maryland, is in honor of Charles the First's Queen, Henrietta Maria.  Cecil's younger brother, Leonard Calvert became the first Governor.  The Calverts are represented in the state flag by their design in yellow and black in the first and fouth quarters.  The first Baron's mother was a Crossland.  That family's red and white design is represented in a cross bottony in the remaining two quarters.

This flag was first flown on October 11,1880 in a parade commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the city of Baltimore.  I t was flown on October 25, 1888 at Gettysburg Battlefield for ceremonies for monuments dedicated to Maryland Regiments.
