NEW JERSEY STATE FLAG FACTS
New Jersey was the 3rd state to enter the Union on December 18, 1787. The state flag was adeopted in 1938.
The New Jersey state flag has a buff colored field and features the shield from the state arms with the state motto, "Liberty and Prosperity" and "1776" on a scroll beneath it. One of the supporters of the shield, Ceres, is the Goddess of Agriculture. She represents a general agricultural theme depicted by the three plows in the shield. The other supporter is Liberty. On top of the shield is a knight's helmut signifying the state's sovereignty and above that is a horse's head. The head represents agriculture, commerce, speed and strength. The buff colored field represents the state's military uniforms color chosen by General George Washington during the War For Independence.
