VIRGINIA STATE FLAG FACTS
Virginia was the 10th state to enter the Union on June 25, 1788. The flag iin its present form was adopted in 1776. The original version dates back to circa 1761. The seal on the field of blue shows the figure of Virtue, dressed as an Amazon and holding a spear and a resheathed sword, standing triumphantly over the corpse of a slain tyrant still clutching a broken length of chain and whose crown is lying lost on the ground. This represents the state motto, "Sic Semper Tyrannis" meaning "Thus Always to Tyrants" .
