FINLAD FLAG FACTS

Finland was conquered by Sweden in the 12th Century.  It came under Russian control in 1809 and remained there until the Russian Revolution in 1917 when it gained independence.  The republic of Finland was established in 1919.   Finland adopted its flag at that time; however, the design dates back to 1863 in the mid 19th century.  It clearly demonstrates the strong influence of the Scandinavian nations with the cross taking up the entire field.  The cross was originally square but over the centuries as in the other Scandinavian nations the cross bar was extended.  The Blue and White represent the lakes and snow.
