CONTINENTAL FLAG FACTS
This flag was used as early as 1737. It is commonlly referred to as the New England Flag. There are several variations of the flag of New England but most designs feature a plain red or blue field with a white canton. A red cross was sometimes a part of the design in the canton but some colonists objected to it beacause the Cross of St. George was a definite symbol of England. The pine tree was added to some designs during the reign of King James II pehaps because of the pine tree shilling that was minted in Massachusetts.
A flag of New England was very important and necessary to shipping merchants who needed a flag raised to identify the ship as American. It is another reason for keeping the design distinctly different from any British flag.
There are conflicting reports as to whether this was the flag raised at the Battle of Bunker Hill fought on Breed's Hill in 1776. Reports that a Red flag with a white square canton in the upper left hoist corner bearing a New England symbol of a pine tree was observed during the Battle of Bunker Hill. No contemporary documentation of the historical battle in Charlestown, Massachusetts confirms that account.
