OLD GLORY FLAG FACTS

"Old Glory" is a common nickname for the flag of the United States.  The Old Glory flag preserved at the Smithsonian Institute probably dates back to around the 1820's and has 24 stars.  It received its name from a Captain William Driver of Salem Massachusetts.  He was presented with a flag sewn by his mother and her friends, and he named it "Old Glory".  He carried that flag on board ship on his voyages.  Twice around the world, once to Australia and once to Pitcairn's Island.  When he retired in 1837, he took the flag with him to his new home in Nashville, Tennessee whene he flew it on his property on holidays

In 1860 his wife and one of his daughters took the flag apar,t repaired the seams and replaced the old stars while adding more to bring the flag to the proper number of stars,  At that time there were 34 states in the Union. thus they added 10 stars.   The Captain added an anchor in the lower right hand corner to honor his service at sea.  The flag played an interesting role in the Civil War.

When Tennessee seceded from the Union, Captain Driver heard that some Confederate sympathizers were planning to destroy his flag.  He removed it and had it sewn inside a comforter to hide and preserve it.  When Nashville was liberated by the Union Army, Captain Driver invited a captain of an Ohio regiment into his home, ripped open the comforter to expose the flag.  He folder the flag, carried it to the State House with escort and then climbed to the dome and raised his flag over the city.  As he did this he is reported to have said, "Thank you God!  I lived to raise "Old Glory" on the dome of the Capitol of Tennessee;  I am now ready to die and go to my forefathers."  Up to that time, "Old Glory" was know only as Captain Driver's personal name for the flag.  He received so much publicity that the national flag became known by its nickname.  Today it is a synonym for the United States flag.
