STARS AND BARS ( First Confederate) FLAG FACTS
The Congress of the Confederate States of America, CSA, adopted its new flag soon after convening in March 1861. They chose a design using heraldic symbols of the US flag. It was formally adopted on March 4, 1861 and has been known since as the Stars and Bars because of its circle of stars and three large bars.
The political intention of the CSA was to point out by the design that it was the Confederacy that adhered to the princi;les of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution rather than the United States.
The design of this flag caused a very dangerous problem during the battle of Manassas and Bull Run Creek in Virginia. Soldiers from the North and the South were confused by the similarities to the Stars and Stripes and many unecessary casualties resulted. Southern Commander P.G.T. Beauregard insisted on a new design for his army. The Confederate Battle flag using the cross of St Andrew as the major part of the design became his flag.
