PORTUGAL FLAG FACTS
Portugal adopted a new flag in 1910 when they established a new republic. Red and Green are the republic colors; the central seal symbolizes the Imperial past. The White shield containing five Blue shields symbolizes the five Moorish princes defeated by King Alphonso Henriques at the Battle of Ourique in 1139. The five White shapes on the shields represent the wounds of Christ in whose honor the battle was fought and to whom victory was attributed. The seven Gold castles in the orle, the border of the shield, represent Portugal's expansion as a result of King Alphonso's marriage in 1146 The armillary sphere, a navigational tool at the time, represents Portugal's explorers who set out by ship and discovered the New World. These symbols are said to represent collectively the United Kingdom of Portugal.
