DENMARK FLAG FACTS
The flag of Denmark is one of the oldest flags in use today. The Danish cross flag known as Dannebrog dates back to ancient times. The original flag was square with a White cross, equal-armed, similar to the cross of St. George. Over time the equal arm cross was extended into the well known Scandinavian cross. The design spread to the other Scandinavian countries. The Red and White color combination was common to European Christian nations at the time that the flag was first used.
The cross first appeared on the royal arms of King Valdemar iV. The legend is that during the Battle of Lyndanisse in 1219 when the Christian Danes were victorious over the pagan Estonians, the cross appeared as a vision to the Danes on the eve of the Battle.
Denmark flies its flag proudly whenever possible. Children paiint their faces, dinner tables are adorned with tiny flags, dannebrog pennants otherwise known as wimpoles are often seen hanging outside the main door to a home, and Christmas trees often have tiny flags decorating them along with candles.
