GERMANY FLAG FACTS

Black and gold were the colors of the first German Empire and were used together with the red from soldiers' uniforms worn in campains against Napoleon.  The horizontal tricolor was used as a rallying banner by those seeking the unification of the German states. This flag was first used in 1848 but was not officially adopted until 1849.  The Prussian flag was first used for the unified German states but in 1919 the black, gold and red was readopted by the Weimar government.

All the provinces of Germany have their own flags.
