PUERTO RICO FLAG FACTS

The Puerto Rico flag was adopted on July 25, 1952,  It was first used on December 22, 1895 at a meeting to discuss Cuban and Puerto Rican independence from Spain.  The island became a protectorate of the United States after the Spanish-American War in 1898.  Puerto Rico became self governing in 1952, the year the flag was adopted, and remains an independent territory.  Its flag flies only beside the Stars and Stripes.

The original design is influenced by the flag of the United States.  It is similar to the Cuban flag with the colors of the triangle and bars reversed.  There is much meaning in the colors - White for peace and honesty, Red for hardiness, strength, bravery and valor , and Blue for vigilance, truth  royalty, perserverence and justice.

The three equal sides of the Blue triangle represent the three branches of the Republican government and the five pointed White star centered represents the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.  The three Red stripes stand for  blood and the two White stripes for the rights of man and the freedom of the individual.

Etiquette for the Puerto Rican flag is very strict and adhered to at all times.  Basic flag ettiquette applies to all nations including Puerto Rico.
