WYOMING STATE FLAG FACTS
Wyoming was the 44th stae to enter the Union on July 10, 1890. The state's flag was adopted in 1917.
The design won a contest sponsored by the Daughters of the Revolution in 1916. This design has been revised several times to arrive at today's design. The buffalo faces the pole with the state seal superimposed on the body in imitation of branding livestock.
The state seal. Wyoming was the first state to grant unrestricted civil and political rights to women in 1869. This is incorporated into the seal both by the motto, "EQUAL RIGHTS", and by the appearance of a woman in the design. The state's ranching and mining industries are represented by the figures of a cowboy and a miner. The red border symbolizes the blood of the pioneers.
