WASHINGTON STATE FLAG FACTS

Washington was the 42nd state to enter the Union on November 11, 1899.  The state flag was adopted in 1923 although it had appeared as early as 1915. 

The state's nickname is the "Evergreen State" and green was chosen for the field color to represent forestry.  The flag includes the state seal with George Washington's image in a light blue circle inside a yellow band inscribed in black lettering with "The Seal of the State of Washington..1889".  The original seal was designed by Olympia jeweler, Charles Talcott, who used an ink bottle and a silver dollar to make the rings and a postage stamp with Washington's image for the art.  His brother, L Grant Talcott, lettered the inscription.  Another brother, G. N. Tlacott, cut the printing dye. In 1967 a portrait by the artist, Gilbert Stuart was adopted for both the seal and the flag.
