HAWAII STATE FLAG FACTS

Hawaii was the 50th state to enter the Union on August 21, 1959.  Today's flag was introduced in 1845.

The Union Jack at the top left of the flag does not denote any allegience to the United Kingdom.  In 1793 George Vancouver, a British Army officer, presented the islands a gift of a Union Jack.   King Kamehameha I liked it so much that it was used as the independent kingdom of Hawaii's official flag until 1816. 

The eight White, Red and Blue alternating stripes in today's flag represent the state's major islands.  There are 122 islands altogether.
