BRAZIL FLAG FACTS
Brazil was colonized by Portugal and its flag colors in particular blue and white, are influenced by the flag of Portugal. Brazil gained independence in 1822 and the new flag colors chosen, green and yellow represent the vast Rainforest and jungle and gold as well as many other mineral resources. The diamond shape in the center of the flag also represents the mineral resources.
During the revolution in 1889, the coat of arms was removed from Brazil's flag and was replaced by the celestial globe with a night sky of the Southern Hemisphere. The globe bears a scroll inscribed with the words "Ordem e Progresso" - "Order and Progress". The idea to use the globe may have come from earlier Brazilian flags which included a crowned armillary sphere used by early navigators and was the symbol of the Portugese King, Manuel I. The twenty three stars in the night sky represent the country's states and federal district, which contains Brazil's capital, Brasilia.
