OHIO STATE FLAG FACTS

Ohio was the 17th state to enter the Union on March 1, 1803.  The state did not have a flag for another 100 years.  John Eisemann, an architect, designed the present flag in 1901 for the purpose of flying over the Ohio building at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York.  The state legislature officially adopted the flag on May 9, 1902

The most distinctive aspect of the design is the burgee shaped field making it original among the other 49 states.  The triangles represent the hills and valleys of Ohio and the red and white stripes are said to represent the roads and waterways.  The white circle in the blue triangle represents the NorthWest Territory. Additionally in the blue triangle the white "O" and red circle symbolize Ohio but also the nut of the state tree, the Buckeye Chestnut.  The thirteen white stars clustered around the "O" represent the thirteen original colonies with four stars in the apex of the triangle making seventeen for its place in entering the Union.
