Alaska was the 49th state to enter the Union on January 13, 1959. Its flag was adopted in 1927 well before statehood.
In 1926, when Alaska was still a territory, this striking flag was designed by an Native American student who participated in a competition. It displays the Plough or Big Dipper and the Polaris, the North Star, Set on a Dark Blue field the gold color of the stars represents the state's enormous mineral resources.
