GREECE FLAG FACTS
The Greek flag may have been inspired by the stripes in the American flag, the stripes in this case signifying the nne syllables in the Greek freedom slogan, "Eieutheria i Thanatos" (Liberty or Death) used in the war for independence from the Ottomans in 1821-1832. The Greek cross in the canton represents the Greek Orthodox Christian cross.
Blue is for the sea and the sky. White is for the purity of the Freedom fighters' cause. Varying shades of blue have been used over the years. Politics played an influential role in what flag design was used. In 1970 the modern flag with the stripes and cross in the canton was flown at sea. The flag ised on land was the cross on its own. Between 1970 and 1974 only the striped flag was used; in 1974 - 1975 the two flags were used. In 1975 to 1978 only the cross was used, and finally in 1978 the current design was readopted as the sole national flag.
