WISCONSIN STATE FLAG FACTS

Wisconsin was the 30th state to enter the Union on May 29, 1848. 

During the Civil War the state's troops requested a state flag to carry but one did not exist.  The legislature authorized the development of the state's official flag.  The flag was adopted in 1863.

The state flag was officially abolished for some reason in 1887.  It was reinstated in a somewhat revised version in 1929.  It was revised a second time in 1981 to make it more distinctive by adding  "Wisconsin" and the statehood date "1848" in White letters. 

The flag has a dark Blue field and features the state seal of Wisconsin adopted in 1881.  It depicts a miner and a seaman supporting a shield on which appear symbols of mining, navigation, transportation and agriculture.  The US coat of arms in included to signify the state's loyalty to the Union.  Above the shield is a badger reminding us of the state's nickname, The Badger State.
